The VA conducts research on the
causes, progression, diagnosis, and treatment of
virtually the full range of diseases and disorders
affecting veterans. Its researchers address VA health
care priorities such as: patient outcomes, quality of
care, access to care, cost and cost effectiveness,
alternative organizational and delivery models, and
development of new research methods and measurement
tools.
Collecting fundamental research on
disorders of significance to the veteran population is
nothing new; however, how specific research data is
collected, analyzed and reported has given rise to an
innovation which is a significantly more efficient
cutting edge technology programmed to rapidly translate
research results into improved patient care.
Systems, Services & Designs, Inc,
consistent with the Mission of VHA, Office of Research & Development, has
designed, developed and implemented the “WAIT TIME”
system for the VA Medical Center, Erie, PA. This system provides for the
collection of patient/performance data using handheld
PCs/PDAs. The “WAIT TIME” system integrates the use of a
customized database, customized data entry forms and
wireless handheld technology to analyze data to create
accurate and timely reports. The implementation of this
system has streamlined and improved the data collection
process and enhanced decision making relative to
improved patient care. |
Benefits of Handheld PCs/PDAs:
- Collect information more flexibly
and accurately.
- Saves data entry time.
- Collect, download and synchronize
information into a centralized database.
- Data is immediately available for
analysis.
- Translate patient/research data
into improved patient care.
